Ukraine War Who profits from the destruction of Kakhovka Dam?
On June 6, 2023, the dam of Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant in Ukraine was destroyed. Even though there are neither clear indications nor an investigation, for Western media and politicians Russia seems to be the culprit for sure. But is it that easy? This broadcast tackles this question and offers a clarifying comparison of motives.

In the early morning hours of June 6, 2023, the hydropower dam of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant in Ukraine was destroyed. The reservoir with the size of 2,155 km² is almost half the surface area of Luxembourg. The dam burst led to widespread flooding downstream. The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator speaks of potentially serious and far-reaching consequences for the people in the region.
The dam was under Russian control. Kiev and Moscow accuse each other of ecological terrorism. According to the Ukraine president Zelensky, Russian troops have blown up the dam from inside. He compared the alleged blasting with the use of an “ecological weapon of mass destruction”.
Even though there are neither clear indications nor an investigation, for Western Media and politicians it seems to be clear.
Swiss Radio and Television SRF: Many indications point towards Russia being responsible for the bursting of the dam. That’s what most observers believe.
EU President Michel: “…We will hold Russia and its proxies accountable.”
German Foreign Minister Annalena Bearbock: “There is only one thing responsible for this environmental catastrophe: Russia’s criminal war of aggression on Ukraine.”
The German chancellor Olaf Scholz said Russia’s aim had been “to stop the offensive of the Ukrainian military”.
The Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas: Terrorist State Russia has now turned water into a weapon.
These are some examples of the prejudgments of the Russian government. And this even though facts have not been clarified yet on how the dam was destroyed.
Even SRF writes: “Whether the dam was deliberately blown up or simply inadequately maintained under Russian occupation cannot be said at present.”
But what is not being mentioned is that it could as well have been attacked by Ukrainian Forces. An article from the Washington Post from December 2022 confirms that Ukrainian forces have already been carrying out attacks on the dam using HIMARS missiles. It is also known that a Ukrainian general, in comments to the Washington Post last December, admitted planning attacks on the Kakhovka dam.
In order to be able to clarify who is to blame, first the question about the motives should be answered: Who profits from the destruction of the Khakovka dam?
The possibility of a destruction of the dam has been known since quite some time. Already on November 30, 2022, the US military analyst Michael Kofman said: “Destroying the dam would mean Russia essentially blowing its own foot off. It would flood the Russian-controlled part of Kherson much more than the western part that Ukrainians are likely to liberate”. This part meanwhile has been “liberated”.
In addition, there were “secondary impacts” that would be severe for Russia, Kofman said. After some time, the river level behind the dam would drop. This would threaten Crimea’s water supply. In addition, access to cooling water for the Zaporizhzhia power plant could be hampered.
What can be said after a few hours after the dam blast is that primarily Russian positions were destroyed by the flooding. The left bank of Dnipro River, which is controlled by Russia, is lower than the Ukraine-controlled bank. Russia has built its defenses on the river, which will be useless after the blast because they are already up to five meters under water.
The fact that the destruction of the dam coincides with reports on the start of the Ukrainian counteroffensive speaks more for Ukrainian perpetration. Russia has to relocate its troops and evacuate civilians. Because the gigantic reservoir is now becoming a “river,” the Ukrainian army can more easily get to the other side to attack Russian troops.
The reservoir was important for the water supply on both sides. Crimea, in particular, which is water-scarce, drew its water from the reservoir via a canal. If Moscow had used the destruction of the dam as a “weapon,” then also against its own population, which hardly makes sense. In addition, there is the propagandistic effect. Kiev accuses Russia of blowing up the dam, and the West’s media machine repeats this unchecked like a broken record. Russia is called a “terrorist state” which blew up a dam and put civilians in danger.
Well-known U.S. television host Tucker Carlson brings it to the point on Twitter: “Blowing up the dam may be bad for Ukraine, but it hurts Russia more, and for precisely that reason the Ukrainian government has considered destroying it.”
How it happened and who caused the dam’s destruction cannot be said with absolute certainty yet. However, what can be said, is that neither of the warring parties can be trusted: “In war, truth is the first casualty.” Western media and politicians once again are being exposed as warmongers. With thorough journalism and comparison of motives, also Kiev as well may very well be held responsible for the destruction of the dam.
