Many people are switching to cultured meat precisely because of animal welfare and a conscious approach to nutrition. Unfortunately, they are falling for a huge PR scam. The claim that no animals are killed in the process is simply false. Currently, most cultured or cell-based meats are made using fetal bovine serum, which is extracted from the blood of unborn calves. In short, pregnant cows are slaughtered to drain the blood from the unborn fetus, according to the Uncut News article. Is synthetic meat substitute safe for consumers? To grow the cell cultures, for example, some companies use immortal cells, which are technically precancerous - essentially completely cancerous. Other companies use embryonic stem cells or cells from living animals. The meat substitutes grown on cancerous cells could therefore be considered tumors, since the meat is made entirely of cancerous cells. The reason for using immortal cells is that cells that behave normally cannot divide forever. So if you wanted to grow thousands of pounds of tissue with normal muscle meat cells from a small number of cells, it wouldn't work. What do experts say about contaminants in engineered meat? Regarding safety, it could also be argued that natural beef could become contaminated during processing, packaging, transportation, storage, or cooking. But with cultured meat, every ingredient and processing method carries a risk of contamination..the potential for contamination is increasing, and any of the hundreds of ingredients could have toxic effects alone or in synergy.
