Double standards of the West for Kosovo and Crimea

“You should always remember that while you point your index at others, three other fingers are pointing back at you”. This is what Gustav Heinemann, former President of the Federal Republic of Germany, said about hypocritical moral claims. A case of hypocritical double standards in the West became obvious when the central government of Yugoslavia took a different view of Kosovo’s declaration of independence in comparison to Crimea’s secession from Ukraine. Western governments unanimously recognized Kosovo’s secession from Yugoslavia in February 2009 but at the same time, claimed that the secession of Crimea from Ukraine in April 2014 violates international law. Here are some brief facts as a reminder: The International Court of Justice published a legal opinion on Kosovo on 22 July 2010 stipulating that the unilateral declaration of independence did not violate international law. However, on the basis of this ruling and without any double standards, both Crimea's declaration of independence and its subsequent accession to the Russian Federation would be legal. For after their voluntarily chosen separation from Ukraine, the Crimean population could choose, according to international law, whether they wanted to be independent or join another state. In addition, in the case of Kosovo, only elected deputies, i.e. a small fraction of the population, voted on the declaration of independence, whereas the entire population of Crimea voted a referendum that expressed their will.
