For at få et indtryk af, hvordan krigsrapportering fungerer i mainstream-medierne, er det værd at tage et kig på den nærmeste fortid. Det gør journalisten Thomas Röper bl.a. i sin nye bog “INSIDE CORONA“.

Krigsdækning – dikteret til medierne af Pentagon?
Rusland bliver gentagne gange beskyldt for ikke at udøve pressefrihed og for at undertrykke kritiske røster i pressen.
Men er rapporteringen i Vesten bedre?
Er den nuværende krigsrapportering neutral, således at f.eks. krigsforbrydelser afsløres på begge sider, eller må vi gå ud fra, at rapporterne også her allerede virker manipulerede?
I sin bog "INSIDE CORONA" skriver den undersøgende journalist Thomas Röper bl.a. om mediernes rolle i rapporteringen. I den forbindelse ser han tilbage på året 2008.
På det tidspunkt afslørede New York Times i USA og SPIEGEL i Europa, at Bush-regeringens store PR-styrke (public relations) i årevis havde ført offentligheden bag lyset i årevis.
Målet var at fremstille krigene i Afghanistan og Irak som et godt arbejde og en succes i mediedækningen.
Som følge heraf kom det i 2009 frem i lyset, at Pentagon, og dermed det amerikanske forsvarsministerium, beskæftigede 27.000 personer, som udelukkende var ansvarlige for den mediemæssige polering af amerikanske krige.
Den schweiziske avis Tages-Anzeiger tog også sagen op på det tidspunkt og præciserede omfanget af det, der var sket, og citerede Tom Curley, den daværende leder af AP-agenturet, for at have kendskab til sagen:
”Militærets PR-maskineri koster skatteyderne 4,7 milliarder dollars om året.
Siden 2004 er udgifterne steget med 63 %. […]
I 2009, sagde han, blev der planlagt 5.400 pressemeddelelser, 3.000 tv-spots og 1.600 radiointerviews - dobbelt så meget som i 2007.
Denne tjeneste er kun en lille del af Pentagons stadigt voksende medieimperium.
Det er allerede større end langt de fleste pressekoncerner i USA.”
SPIEGEL-artiklen fortsatte med at vise, hvordan "Pentagon-medarbejdere spillede sig selv op som eksperter i medierne, men aldrig lod det fremgå, hvorfra de havde fået de præcise oplysninger og analyser.
Röper konkluderer:
Når SPIEGEL og andre medier taler ”fra unavngivne kilder” fra et ministerium eller en efterretningstjeneste, kan man næsten med sikkerhed ud fra sætninger, der indledes på denne måde, gå ud fra, at der er tale om bevidst vildledning af offentligheden, der bevidst er videregivet til medierne af de tilsvarende organer.
Tilbage til Tom Curley, den daværende chef for nyhedsbureauet AP, som kendte fakta og tal for Pentagons propaganda.
Den schweiziske Tages-Anzeiger tog også spørgsmålet om det enorme antal ansatte i Pentagon op og om, hvordan de ville forsyne nyhedsbureauerne med trimmede krigsrapporter.
Men han kendte også til en vigtig detalje:
I februar 2009 ville Tom Curley have fortalt journalisterne på University of Kansas om det amerikanske forsvarsministeriums pres på sine journalister i krigszoner.
Mere end 11 AP-journalister er blevet arresteret i Irak i mere end 24 timer siden 2003.
Højtstående generaler havde truet med, at AP og han ville blive ruineret, hvis journalisterne fortsatte med at insistere på deres journalistiske principper.
Det er klart, at Pentagon selv dengang kun overfladisk holdt sig til sit motto ”Vesten kæmper for demokrati og pressefrihed”.
Tom Curley trådte tilbage som leder af AP i 2012, og der kom næsten ingen yderligere rapporter om dette emne, fortæller Thomas Röper i sin bog ”INSIDE CORONA”.
Han slutter med at sige, at offentliggørelsen af disse fakta desværre ikke har ændret noget, og at det ikke ville have udløst kritiske spørgsmål eller proteststorme på det tidspunkt.
Dette eksempel er dog stadig et eksempel på, hvordan medierne når frem til deres rapporter, og hvordan Pentagon udøver direkte indflydelse på krigsrapporteringen.
Det giver mening at huske på disse eksempler på tidligere krigsrapportering, når vi læser aktuelle krigsrapporter!
