The business of “self-chosen death”

The new invention for suicide using the Sarco capsule breaks the dam protecting life. Following Canada's euthanasia program, what critics have long feared is now following on: the rapid increase in "death on demand". Switzerland, which has long been known for its liberal regulation on assisted suicide, must now deal with another new business model of self-chosen death. There is currently a heated debate in the canton of Schaffhausen about the legality of the controversial "Sarco-Pod" suicide capsule. The Sarco capsule, a coffin-shaped, fully automatic gas capsule made with a 3D printer, is intended to enable a self-determined death. After taking part in an online survey to determine free will, you receive a code for access and can climb into the killing capsule. Inside you will find a lever that you simply turn. After about 30 seconds, you will lose consciousness. On September 23, 2024, the capsule was used for the first time in a forest in the canton of Schaffhausen, killing a 64-year-old American woman. The woman deliberately traveled to Switzerland for this purpose. Philip Nitschke, the inventor of the capsule and president of the company "Exit International", watched the woman's death via live video broadcast from the Netherlands. The Schaffhausen police then arrested everyone present on site - for incitement and aiding and abetting suicide. Nitschke was also arrested and his computers and a Sarco prototype were confiscated. As of October 8, 2024, Nitschke is in custody. 371 other people are still on the waiting list for a death in the capsule. The authorities still need more clarification. One thing is certain: politicians are trying to specify the legal framework for Sarco deaths. The discussion is in full swing, and one hears from all sides different, sometimes very moving reasons and stories for using the capsule. "Self-determination" is a big buzzword here. But let's listen to the example of Canada's MAID program: It's no longer "just" about euthanasia for adults. Even children with no minimum age limit can choose to end their lives "of their own choosing," "by their own decision." Infants should be aborted using "postnatal killing." And which moral authority decides where the line is drawn? If Swiss politics cannot put a stop to things like simplified suicide, all we can do is watch as the dam breaks and we legally sacrifice children again here in our European neighborhood. Are you poor, depressed, disabled, or otherwise socially unacceptable? Then choose a nice death instead! Anyone who hears a statement like that will think they must have misheard! However, the slogan of the Canadian government's euthanasia program - Medical Assistance in Dying - could soon be something like this. The Canadian euthanasia industry has expanded plans to specifically support suicide. This state-sanctioned and organized suicide, which has been around for several years, is taking on increasingly absurd forms. It cannot be denied that there is a certain similarity here with the science fiction film "Soylent Green", in which people are happy to die for the common good of society rather than being an inconvenient burden. Canada has decided to define suicide by lethal injection as health care. Not only is there a demand to make this option available to 12-year-olds. Now two philosophers from the University of Toronto are even arguing that euthanasia of the poor should be socially accepted. Kayla Wiebe, a PhD student in philosophy, and bioethicist Amy Mullin, professor of philosophy, write in the Journal of Medical Ethics: In plain language, the two women are saying that there are only two options: a miserable life with no hope of help or improvement, or a "beautiful suicide". What Wiebe and Mullin call the "worst case" nevertheless strictly boils down to the fact that such disadvantaged people have the right to decide for themselves about their lives. In their opinion, everyone should have the right to decide whether their life is worth living, and this decision should be respected. Although they say this solution is tragic, it would still be the best "approach to limiting the damage". The question inevitably arises here as to who such inhuman solutions limit the damage the most. To reinforce their view that suicide is "ethically acceptable", the two women use frightening storiesCanadian citizens who have to resort to assisted suicide due to a lack of social assistance. Given the rapid development of Canada's suicide regulations and the Trudeau government's determination to expand them further, proposals such as these should be treated with deadly seriousness. Instead of the political leadership doing everything in its power to remedy the situation and make the lives of such sufferers more livable at any cost, "suicide" is not only encouraged but is proposed as the most acceptable solution. Anyone who makes death more important to the citizens of his people than life is committing a crime. And anyone who does not fight to protect the lives of his fellow human beings at any cost and helps to make them more livable should not call themselves a representative of the people or act as one.
