YES to peace! Tens of thousands demonstrate in Berlin
Everyone speaks to everyone! The common desire for peace unites thousands of people and overcomes social divides. "No to wars and armaments!" 40,000 people demonstrated loudly, colorfully and determinedly in Berlin on October 3, 1924.

Reiner Braun: Dear fellow campaigners for peace. On behalf of the organizers “Never again war, lay down your arms”, supported by more than 3,500 initiatives and organizations, I welcome you to this peace rally in Berlin.
Moderator: Under the common motto “Win peace, now or never!” numerous people gathered on the streets of Berlin on October 3rd. The nationwide peace demonstration brings people from a wide variety of political, social and religious camps together. Everyone is united by the desire for peace. The situation in Ukraine and the Middle East conflict are becoming dangerously serious. In view of the growing danger of a major war, people are saying: “No to arms deliveries, no to the Bundeswehr in schools, no to warmongering.” With posters and speeches, people are expressing their concern about the huge amounts of money being pumped into the arms industry. Instead, this money should be invested in healthcare, education, climate protection and infrastructure.
Ulrike Guérot: I believe that Europe has only one chance not to gamble away its own future. And that is precisely that: we must now actively engage in shuttle diplomacy, namely shuttle diplomacy for peace with Russia and Ukraine, as well as with Israel and Gaza. That is our task. That is, so to speak, the task of this continent. We cannot wage war either. We see, so to speak, that the EU is first and foremost militarily, it is NATO. That means that as Europeans we are becoming agents of NATO, so to speak. I think that is reprehensible. That means that our role should actually be to demand a sovereign and emancipated Europe that says quite clearly that for us on this continent a peace order with Russia, where Ukraine is pacified and can function as a bridge to Russia, that this is in our interest. Anything else means that we allow ourselves to be instrumentalized as Europe for the interests of other states. I actually think that the EU is not living up to its historical role. For 70 years we have said that Europe, the EU, means never more war. That is actually the founding myth, the founding narrative of the European Union. And that we are now trying, or that some are trying, to unite this European Union in war, so to speak. We now have to supply weapons. That means that we have become biased, instead of remembering that what Europe wanted, as I said, was the European peace architecture. That was our goal in 1989, that was our goal of the Charter of Paris in 1991. We have forgotten all that somewhere.
Reiner Braun: And I say that in reference to the war in Ukraine. There is no way around negotiations, immediate and comprehensive. The people of Ukraine will hardly survive a third winter of war. That is why we need peace and a ceasefire.
Demo participant: We will all lose in the war. We will all lose through escalation. That is the first thing. The ones who will suffer are us, our families and our friends. And we must understand that there are no differences between us. No matter where we come from, who we are, our backgrounds. The war in Gaza is portrayed as a religious war. But it is not. It is a war of interests. And people are dying. And we are human beings. And we must be clear about that
Reiner Braun: The murder, the killing, the murdering in Gaza and Lebanon must stop immediately. A ceasefire, a peaceful solution for this region, is essential. That is what we are demanding at this point. And the federal government must stop supplying weapons. We need diplomacy and negotiations, not wars and not exports of war.
Tanya Uryn: Well, I live here, but I am Jewish and belong to the Jewish Voice for Just Peace in the Middle East. And we have been saying for 20 years: "Not in our name." That means that the Israeli government and Israel itself claims or has the right to speak in our name, in the name of all Jews in the world. Although we did not elect this government. Yes, we live somewhere else in the world and say: “Not in our name”. There is a difference between Jews and Israel, Judaism and Zionism too. And of course I live in Germany, which has become really authoritarian in recent years and abuses Jews to promote these authoritarian tendencies. It is aligned with the fight against anti-Semitism, the alleged fight against anti-Semitism. And then we say: “Not in our name”. We will not allow ourselves to be abused by the German press, by German politics, because then we will be used to promote a division in society. This also makes us the object of hatred for other minorities. This is also for the Jews are dangerous in this country. No arms deliveries to Israel. No violence, for a ceasefire, including in Ukraine. That war becomes absurd and diplomacy becomes desirable.
Reiner Braun: I think we are all united by this concern. We should get new first-strike weapons in Germany, which we must prevent. The medium-range weapons planned for 2026 will dramatically increase the risk of war and turn Europe into a war zone. Whether nuclear or conventional, there will not be much left in Europe when there is a cutback and an exchange of weapons. That is why we want to prevent that. And that is, I believe, the unanimous opinion and reflects the mood that prevails here today. We want these wars to stop. In Ukraine as well as in Palestine and Lebanon. And that is why we are for diplomacy, for negotiations and for a ceasefire. And that unites us here, despite everything else that divides us. And that is why so many people have come today. And that is why this day and this demonstration are an encouraging start for me for more, for further action. We need a real popular movement against these weapons in the next two years, to prevent them, to make it politically impossible to station them here.
Moderator: Now you have already mentioned the nuclear weapons, which are being considered relatively thoughtlessly. Someone with common sense could think, well, actually it is obvious that nuclear weapons are not an option in this day and age or in general. But you don't sound so sure about that. Apparently there are people pulling the strings who may have a different opinion. Isn't that a bit exaggerated, a bit doom-mongering? Or what observations have you made regarding nuclear weapons?
Reiner Braun: Well, first of all, Albert Einstein said that people's stupidity is infinite. And I think that is still true today. And the stupidity of our politicians is similar to this infinity. These weapons are so dangerous because they can no longer be intercepted, but because they can only be destroyed by a pre-emptive attack. And that basically means causing a nuclear inferno in Europe. Because Russia will still have enough of a second-strike capability, but then Europe will be in ruins. And if you ask how this can be prevented or why this is the case, the reason is simple in my view. We live in a world of such rapid social change, a reorientation of this world in which there are losers and winners. This was already the case with the Roman Empire, and it did not go away without a sound. Those who are losing influence, who are losing their hegemony in this world, and that is primarily the USA and Europe, are fighting desperately for their position of power. And unfortunately that is not peaceful. And that is the deeper background to all these wars and conflicts. It is about a new world order. Is it more multipolar or will the old hegemons manage to win back? And that is being played out in Ukraine, it is being played out in West Asia and it is being played out in the South China Sea, to take just three hotspots. And that is what makes our world so incredibly dangerous. I think that today you can no longer paint a bleak picture. The time for painting a bleak picture, if there ever was one, is over. The drama of the current situation - and it is not me who is saying this, it is said by many, many military personnel, especially former military personnel who can speak freely - cannot be expressed clearly enough. So I think that none of us should be accused of not having said clearly enough how dangerous it is. Because, and then I am back to Einstein, the Second World War could still have winners. In the Third World War there may still be bows and arrows afterwards. Although I doubt whether that will still exist. So painting a bleak picture, unfortunately not, it would be nice, it could also be counteracted nicely. But what we are doing is simply 100 percent serious.
Moderator: The international peace movement is now clearly visible on the streets of Berlin. The organizers have also sent out invitations across the board. And they have already said that this common striving for peace is what unites them. What do you think is particularly important for the peace movement, especially at this time, so that it can continue to exercise the power it has and not stumble over its own feet?
Reiner Braun: So the most important thing is that we find a form of solidarity between us in order to discuss our differences of opinion. And the peace movement has always been very, verydiverse, very pluralistic, very different. It will always remain the same. And that's a good thing. But it is also always instructed in certain core positions. And we are now approaching that again. And this demonstration today was a big step towards unity. And we must continue that and move forward and make sure that we take the next steps together. And about everything else, we may need to communicate and exchange ideas with a little more solidarity than in the past.
Demo participant: In our current government, we are forced to take to the streets much more. Parliaments are ruled by war fetishists, but I don't think the majority of people are for war; they have a deep desire for peace. It is bad that politicians and especially the media defame us, actually these people who are for peace, as Putin fans or something else. I think that this is a really pathetic situation in our country, especially in Germany. After we caused 27 million deaths in the Soviet Union, that we are now sending tanks to Russia again is impossible.
Ulrike Guérot: Unfortunately, we obviously have a completely divided media landscape. We have public media that I believe are very biased, i.e. very one-sided. This can now be examined empirically. There is a very good study by Harald Welzer and Leo Keller. They used AI to simply examine the entire media space, a million articles, and were able to statistically prove that only those people who are always in favor of arms deliveries appear in the public media, yes, i.e. Stack-Zimmermann and Kiesewetter, Claudia Major and so on. While other people who have differentiated positions, for example Ms. Krone-Schmalz, hardly appear in the public media anymore. Or Klaus von Dohnanyi and so on. That means we have a division and we have a one-sidedness in the public media, which can even be shown empirically. And of course it is actually, I would say, irresponsible in the sense that the public broadcasters are there to provide balanced reporting. So. In that respect, we have a definite problem. The problem has been recognized. There are already many calls for, or against, reform of public broadcasting and so on. This call has been made. On the other hand, we see - I am now speaking to kla.tv - that there are loads of other media formats, new formats, dynamic, young, small formats, all of which are somehow finding their way and are actually producing a counter-public. That means that we actually have public and counter-public. And the question is how that will turn out. As long as it still works that a large part of the population relies on ARD and ZDF and avoids the so-called alternative media, or as long as it succeeds in putting the alternative media in the dirty corner, that is conspiracy media or whatever these media are, then of course we have a fatal situation.
Song: We raise our heads for freedom and justice. Love is our weapon. We only hate what is unjust. Our drive is unity. Because in it lies all strength. Every crisis is our opportunity, synergy that creates help for us. We speak out about what unites us. Now the opposite is happening. All hearts fly to those who love justice and truth.
Ulrike Guérot: Everyone speaks to everyone. That would be a start. Everyone speaks to everyone. That means I don't like this firewall either, the firewall talk, so to speak. And if we could just get rid of that, that we restrict ourselves to factual arguments, sober factual arguments and say: what do you want in this area, what do you want with Gaza-Israel, what do you want with Ukraine, what are your points? And we sit down at the table and do that across party lines if possible. I think that would be good. Everyone speaks to everyone. That we get rid of this exclusion, this moral superiority, that the others are the Putin sympathizers or are fascists or are I don't know what, the anti-Semites, these are all buzzwords, that anyone who even asks a critical question is immediately discredited with these simple terms: Putin sympathizer, anti-Semite, whatever. Of course, this creates absolute polarization in the debate and this also creates fear among the population. Nobody dares to say anything anymore because everyone is afraid of being portrayed as an anti-Semite or a fascist or a Putin sympathizer. We are Europe and we do not want to be a battlefieldand we have to articulate differently how we can get out of these conflicts. For me, that would be the message of this demonstration.
