Agnes Loheni, a National Party MP who opposed the bill, said: 'This is how abortions are allowed up to the moment of birth. It's a broad, poorly defined, vague section with no regard for the unborn child.'" According to the New York Times, also, New Zealand physician Dr. Catherine Hallagan said that "the term 'well-being' [...] is so broad that virtually all possible justifications for abortion could be acceptable." Incidentally, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern supported removing abortion from the criminal code and voted for the Abortion Legislation Act in March 2020. Whether New Zealand's 2020 Abortion Legislation Act is the most extreme in the world remains to be seen. Other countries such as Canada, the Netherlands and some Australian states also allow abortions up to the 24th week of pregnancy or later if requested. Schiffmann's statements may sound exaggerated and do not occur in this wording in New Zealand's abortion law.
