The Karl Lauterbach file: Urgent warning against the warner!
Since the beginning of the Corona crisis, the mass media have presented Karl Lauterbach as a health expert and epidemiologist. Despite a scandalous past and very questionable behavior, they offer him a platform for often baseless allegations and horror scenarios. The background facts documented in the “Lauterbach file” show a different picture than that of the media, which have aggrandized this man to a key figure in corona issues. This is why Lauterbach would also warn against distributing this program.

With the search term “Lauterbach warns”, Google shows approx. 498,000 messages, with “Lauterbach demands” even 794,000.
In this video, another warning follows: The urgent warning
against Karl Lauterbach and his demands!
Today Karl Lauterbach is checked under the microscope: starting with the laziest MP, who is best simply ignored because of his insignificance – according to the recommendation by a prominent minister – up to a government advisor and talk show king in 2020. Karl Lauterbach, who believes he has to say something about everything, is permanently presented as an expert by the mainstream media, despite his contradictory statements and scandal-ridden past. However, real experts with longstanding expertise almost never get a chance to speak in the mainstream media. This documentary on Karl Lauterbach therefore also reveals the dubious role the mainstream media play in the Corona crisis.
Karl Lauterbach’s warnings belong to everyday Corona life as Laurel belongs to Hardy. Whether it is about the “Covid catastrophe”, a “double mutant”, the next “Corona wave” - Karl Lauterbach warns against anything and everything – including mulled wine stands, “construction-related monstrosities” or going to the loo. This is why in an open letter more than 30 physicians accuse him of misleading the population. They are asking him to clearly separate his political activities from his professional licence as a doctor, in future. Below read some of the severe facts of the Karl Lauterbach file:
1. Karl Lauterbach’s professional competence
The politician Karl Lauterbach, born in Düren in 1963, studied human medicine in Germany and the USA and took his doctoral degree in 1991. From 1989 onward he studied at the Harvard School of Public Health, where he obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) in 1990, specializing in epidemiology and health policy and management, and a Master of Science in Health Policy and Management in 1992. Given the only one year of study in epidemiology it becomes obvious that Lauterbach can only have touched on the subject. This extremely meager epidemiological competence was also confirmed by his ex-wife, the epidemiologist Dr. med. Angela Spelsberg:
“No, he [Karl Lauterbach] did not study the same as me. He did Health Policy and Management. I did Epidemiology.”
She studied together with him in the USA and graduated after four years with a “Master of Science in Epidemiology”.
Therefore the first warning:
Karl Lauterbach’s academic education does not qualify him as
an epidemiologist and certainly not as an expert in this field.
1. The titles of Karl Lauterbach
Today one finds one finds the following entry on Lauterbach's website under publications:
“The thesis “Gerechtigkeit und die Funktionen des Gesundheitswesens” (Justice and the Functions of Health Care) is my doctoral dissertation in medical ethics at the Harvard School of Public Health, dating 1995 concluded with the degree of a Doctor of Science.”
For 20 years, Lauterbach thwarted the publication which is a common procedure with scientific papers. Only the pressure of many fellow MPs made it possible to have a look at it. The reason why is revealed when reading this paper of only 118 pages. It contains no scientific thoughts of his own, but a very creative handling of the references. This prompted the medical doctor and book author Dr. Gunter Frank to inquire at Harvard in 2015. The answer speaks volumes: “It is of course not a scientific work, if by 'science' we mean a work in the natural, biological or even social sciences. If it were presented as a scientific work, one could say that it does not meet the standards applicable to such works. But it doesn't claim to be such. It is just a normative essay [...]”
Karl Lauterbach's doctoral thesis is thus only “a normative essay”, not a scientific paper! How, on the basis of such a poor treatise on moral and economic aspects of a public health system, the academic degree of Doctor of Science could be awarded is a mystery to many.
An even greater mystery is how he obtained the title of “professor”, as he also lacks the qualification by a habilitation. Nevertheless, he was appointed director at the Institute for Health Economics and Clinical Epidemiology (IGKE) at the University of Cologne in 1998. A significant name for this small institute, located above a supermarket located on a through road, where Lauterbach took up his post when it was founded in 1997. Since his election to the German Bundestag in September 2005 – more than 15 years ago – he has been on leave. It is therefore incomprehensible that the media nevertheless present Lauterbach as a specialist in epidemiology and highlight his titles. Against this background, his role as a government advisor – comparable to the case of Christian Drosten – is more than questionable.
Therefore the second warning:
Karl Lauterbach’s titles do not qualify him as an epidemiologist or
as an expert in health issues and therefore in no way as a government advisor!
2. Karl Lauterbach in the service of the pharmaceutical industry
2.1 Ignoring warnings – blaming others
According to Spiegel research from 2004, Karl Lauterbach was involved in the trial on the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipobay by Bayer. This drug, which was already controversial beforehand, was taken off the market in 2001 after several deaths. Afterwards, Bayer corrected the number of victims significantly upwards. About 100 deaths due to Rhabdomyolysis and about 1,600 patients with non-fatal Rhabdomyolysis were known to the manufacturer. Later, experts calculate that there were at least 2,500 deaths worldwide. Karl Lauterbach ignored the early warnings about the danger of this drug, as did the manufacturing company Bayer. The scandal cost them several billion euros and led to the cut of 15,000 jobs. After the devastating pharmaceutical scandal was exposed, Lauterbach, with remarkable audacity, blamed the “inadequate cooperation of the international regulatory authorities” for the Lipobay debacle. He also criticized the lack of long-term studies when new drugs were to be introduced.
2.2 One hand washes the other
In 1998 Karl Lauterbach developed an “Obesity Guideline”, which confirmed the positive effect of the drug Sibutramine in reducing severe overweight. The drug was immediately approved under the trade name Reductil. It is interesting to note that the manufacturer, Knoll AG, supported the guideline financially and with personnel.
As early as in 2002, after 400 cases of side effects and 29 deaths had become known in the USA alone, the medical journal Ärzteblatt reported on demands to take the appetite suppressant off the market. Contrary to the allegedly positive risk-benefit assessment in Lauterbach's obesity guideline, the Ärzteblatt came to a devastating assessment: it was not until 12 years later that politicians reacted and suspended the admission of drugs containing Sibutramine. To date, no benefit exceeding the risk has been proven.
2.3 Rancid aftertaste:
Karl Lauterbach does not shy away from crude surreptitious advertising.
At the European Congress of Cardiologists, he recommended Unilever Bestfoods Margarine. He propagated that health expenditure amounting to 1.3 billion euros could be saved within 10 years if people at risk would switch their fat consumption to this cholesterol-lowering margarine. As early as in 2011, the consumer protection organisation Foodwatch warned against alarming side effects and demanded that sales be stopped.
According to the news magazine Der Spiegel, Lauterbach was known for conducting drug trials on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry. In 2000 alone, he collected over 800,000 euro of so-called third-party funding to this end.
Hence the third warning:
Karl Lauterbach’s statements were often not altruistic and served
the interests of the pharmaceutical industry.
This makes him untrustworthy as a government advisor and expert in the media.
3. Karl Lauterbach's demands and his actual actions
3.1 The scandals at the Rhön-Klinikum
Recently Lauterbach attracted attention by not properly declaring additional income. However, this seems to be only the tip of the iceberg, as Lauterbach collected more than 640,000 euro from 2001 to 2013 as a supervisory board member and advisor to the private listed operator of the hospitals Rhön-Klinikum AG. This did not appear in the official publications of the Bundestag on the supplementary income of MPs; Lauterbach had reported it as being between 7,000 to 15,000 euro.
As the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported in December 2013, cleaning staff at Rhön-Klinikum were exploited for years by dumping wages. Lauterbach, as a member of the supervisory board, claims not to have known anything about this. Instead of ensuring better conditions there by virtue of his office, he complained – as the SPD parliamentary group criticized in a position paper – that a “problematic intensification of services and an increase in the workload of the employees had taken place” in the hospitals. It was demanded that hospitals which undercut the legal minimum wages for nursing staff be financially penalised.
3.2 Lauterbach downplays poison – and demands more protection afterwards!
In February 2016, in the German Bundestag Karl Lauterbach voted against a motion by The Greens to ban the re-approval of the controversial and harmful pesticide glyphosate. In the TAZ, as an alleged “glyphosate expert”, he spread the word that smoking and obesity were more dangerous than the weed poison glyphosate. He claimed that he had been working on glyphosate for a long time and had reviewed the studies himself. Shortly after the vote, Bayer AG announced in May 2016 that it was to take over Monsanto, the world’s largest glyphosate producer and patent holder. Bayer is the company with which Lauterbach was already linked in the Lipobay scandal described above. Bayer’s headquarters are in Leverkusen, which is also Lauterbach’s constituency. Bayer also has a cooperation agreement with the University of Cologne, where Lauterbach’s institute is located. Despite requests by many associations, the University of Cologne refuses to disclose the contents of the contract and the cooperation. After the approval of glyphosate was extended by the EU, Karl Lauterbach suddenly demanded a ban on all pesticides containing glyphosate. It was precisely this ban that he had previously prevented with his own vote!
3.3 Karl Lauterbach's forgotten lessons from the swine flu scandal
Similar to the other government expert Drosten, Karl Lauterbach also urgently warned against the risks of the swine flu in 2009 and vehemently recommended vaccination – even when it was already being criticized because of the side effects caused by the active enhancers it contained: According to Karl Lauterbach, not vaccinating certain risk groups would be an unjustifiable experiment with the health of the population. Due to the strong side effects of the vaccination, such as the sleeping sickness Narcolepsy, it was rather the swine flu vaccination that proved to be an “unjustifiable experiment” in the end!
When, after the swine flu, the federal and state governments wanted to stockpile the vaccine, which had been ordered completely hastily and was then left over, Lauterbach demanded its rapid disposal. He requested the results of the investigation to be included in the pandemic plan to prevent “something like this from ever happening again”. In the current Corona crisis, Karl Lauterbach no longer remembers his insights at the time. In April, he called for the emergency use authorization of another Corona vaccine – even without the approval of the EU Medicines Agency (EMA) – hastily again and without sufficient testing and without obtaining the long-term results! In the meantime, it has turned out that this vaccine, of which several million doses are said to have already been pre-produced, does not meet the specified statistical success criteria even in the tests.
Hence the fourth warning:
Karl Lauterbach does not fulfil his demands himself and often proves to be a turncoat! Thus, he is neither acceptable as a media expert nor as a government advisor.
4 Warning Karl Lauterbach – darling of the media
Despite dubious qualifications, dubious expert status, dubious forecasts and clear pharmaceutical links, Lauterbach is omnipresent in the media and is constantly being quoted. On German television, he was “talk show king” in 2020 with 31 appearances on the five major talk shows. He was a guest at the Markus-Lanz show 17 times alone, and a total of 14 times at Anne Will’s, Maybrit Illner’s, Sandra Maischberger’s and Plasberg's “Hart-aber-fair” show. Among other things, this has led to a sharp increase in search queries for Karl Lauterbach by internet search engines, as the research tool Google-Trends shows. This turns out as a win-win situation – both for the media and for Karl Lauterbach: the media build Karl Lauterbach up as a Corona opinion leader who enhances the media’s rating figures with his horror scenarios and panic propagation. This development is amazing, because already in 2010 the news magazine Stern called him the “leader of the babble industry” and ridiculed his pseudo-science: “Whatever it is about, in front of the camera Lauterbach pulls a bunch of numbers out of his hat [...]”. This description of Lauterbach also applies during the Corona crisis. In the talk show at Maybrit Illner’s on 15 April 2021 he claimed, for example in his typical, confused manner that infected people would not end up in the statistics, but in intensive care units: “Those who are now being treated in intensive care units are on average 47 to 48 years old. Half of them die. Many children lose their parents. This is a tragedy.” This was completely fictitious and also false. There were almost no Corona deaths in the respective age range and the Corona patients in the intensive care units were very well recorded statistically – but not their age.
This prompted even the daily newspaper Die Welt to criticize: “Karl Lauterbach has undoubtedly found his media parade role in this pandemic, which he also fulfilled convincingly in this round. As the great exhorter [...] Lauterbach was not stingy in underpinning his warnings with horror scenarios.”
Hence the fifth warning:
against the kind of media that court Karl Lauterbach
instead of letting real experts have their say.
CONCLUSION
Due to
1. his unproven expertise as an epidemiologist,
2. his more than poor doctoral thesis, the “normative essay”,
3. the various scandals with “commissioned and accommodation studies”,
4. his financial involvement with the pharmaceutical industry,
5. the countless demands which he himself does not comply with,
6. his numerous scaremongering forecasts, with which he is usually off the mark, and
7. the media staging Karl Lauterbach, we must urgently warn:
→ against his statements and demands
→ against media that present him as an expert, and
→ against governments that hire Lauterbach as an advisor.
Whether this is done because of lacking competence or out of scheme, this behavior calls for consequences. Both from the government and the media, but above all from Karl Lauterbach himself. Especially as he likes to demand consequences from others, as for example during the plagiarism affair surrounding the doctoral thesis of the then Federal Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg. In his speech to the Bundestag on 23th February 2011, Lauterbach saw the credibility of politics at risk and warned: “If you lie once, you won't be believed”. He should ask himself the rhetorical question posed afterwards: “Is a liar and a cheat allowed to remain in parliament?”. The answer would be clear!
Dear viewers, Karl Lauterbach would warn against distributing this program and call for a ban on alternative media. If the facts of this video were known to the population, they would not be so easily manipulated by fanning fear. Therefore, listen to the advice of the current Federal Minister of Health, Jens Spahn. As early as 2009, he recommended that Karl Lauterbach should simply be ignored. Dwindling rating figures for the programs with Karl Lauterbach might contribute significantly and prompt the media to finally start a public discourse with real experts. Therefore, please help to spread this documentary about Karl Lauterbach among your acquaintances and the social media. We will show the link to this program to that end!

To date, no benefit exceeding the risk has been proven. 2.3 Rancid aftertaste: Karl Lauterbach does not shy away from crude surreptitious advertising. Hence the third warning: Karl Lauterbach’s statements were often not altruistic and served the interests of the pharmaceutical industry. This makes him untrustworthy as a government advisor and expert in the media. 3. Karl Lauterbach's demands and his actual actions 3.1 The scandals at the Rhön-Klinikum Recently Lauterbach attracted attention by not properly declaring additional income. 3.3 Karl Lauterbach's forgotten lessons from the swine flu scandal Similar to the other government expert Drosten, Karl Lauterbach also urgently warned against the risks of the swine flu in 2009 and vehemently recommended vaccination – even when it was already being criticized because of the side effects caused by the active enhancers it contained: According to Karl Lauterbach, not vaccinating certain risk groups would be an unjustifiable experiment with the health of the population. Hence the fourth warning: Karl Lauterbach does not fulfil his demands himself and often proves to be a turncoat! Thus, he is neither acceptable as a media expert nor as a government advisor. 4 Warning Karl Lauterbach – darling of the media Despite dubious qualifications, dubious expert status, dubious forecasts and clear pharmaceutical links, Lauterbach is omnipresent in the media and is constantly being quoted. As the great exhorter [...] Lauterbach was not stingy in underpinning his warnings with horror scenarios.” Hence the fifth warning: against the kind of media that court Karl Lauterbach instead of letting real experts have their say. CONCLUSION Due to 1. his unproven expertise as an epidemiologist, 2. his more than poor doctoral thesis, the “normative essay”, 3. the various scandals with “commissioned and accommodation studies”, 4. his financial involvement with the pharmaceutical industry, 5. the countless demands which he himself does not comply with, 6. his numerous scaremongering forecasts, with which he is usually off the mark, and 7. the media staging Karl Lauterbach, we must urgently warn: → against his statements and demands → against media that present him as an expert, and → against governments that hire Lauterbach as an advisor.
