Shortly before the federal elections in Germany, on 26 September, one man rises as candidate for chancellor like a phoenix from the ashes: Olaf Scholz. Always kept in the background during the election campaign, he is suddenly tipped as the most promising candidate for chancellorship, ahead of Annalena Baerbock of the Greens, and Armin Laschet of the Christian Democrats, CDU. Olaf Scholz, the SPD man (Social Democratic Party Germany) has already held various important offices: - Senator of the Interior of Hamburg, - SPD Secretary General, - Federal Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, - Chairman of the Hamburg SPD, and later - Federal Chairman of the SPD, - First Mayor of Hamburg from 2011 to 2018. Since March 2018, he has acted as Deputy Federal Chancellor and as Federal Minister of Finance. Olaf Scholz confidently advertises on many posters "Respect for you!". SPD Secretary General Lars Klingbeil explains this meteoric rise shortly before the election by saying that Chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz – unlike CDU candidate Armin Laschet or candidate Annalena Baerbock of the Green Party – does not have to constantly justify his own mistakes, but that he has been succeeding in many affairs and even stands for global tax justice by enforcing the financial transaction tax. That sounds fine. But is it really the case? In the following we will take a closer look at his career and what he has done so far: MAN (unseen): 1. Where does Olaf Scholz come from? Like many other politicians with significant career leaps – such as Jens Spahn, Ursula von der Leyen or Wolfgang Schäuble – Olaf Scholz has also attended a Bilderberg conference. In 2010, representatives of the elites such as Josef Ackermann (then head of Deutsche Bank), Dieter Zetsche (head of Daimler), Robert Zoellick (then head of the World Bank) and …. Olaf Scholz met in Sitges, Spain. The Bilderberg Conference, this exclusive gathering of world leaders, has taken place once a year since 1954 behind closed doors to discuss central political and social issues – completely non-transparent and without any publicity. Scandals during periods of his political responsibility The Cum-Ex scandal Woman (unseen): Cum-Ex is the biggest tax fraud in German history, in which banks and investors cheated the German people out of billions. By way of an elaborate system, taxes were refunded that had never been paid. The resulting tax loss: worth an estimated twelve billion euros. Federal Finance Minister Scholz strongly condemned these machinations as "audacious, cheeky, despicable" and a "huge mess". However, his own role in this scandal is extremely dubious. Among others, the renowned Hamburg bank M. M. Warburg & Co. was involved in the tax fraud. This bank was supposed to refund illegally cashed money amounting to 47 million euros. However, for inexplicable reasons, the Hamburg tax office suddenly waived its right to reclaim these millions. At that time, Olaf Scholz was First Mayor of Hamburg. When Scholz was investigated because of suspicion of political influence, he withheld several meetings with a co-owner of the Warburg Bank. When these meetings were disclosed, Scholz could no longer remember the contents of the conversations. During the clarification of the scandal, a scandal by which the people had been cheated out of hard-earned tax money, Scholz distinguished himself by cover-ups and lack of truthfulness. Respect for you? MAN (unseen) The Wirecard scandal Wirecard AG is an insolvent German financial services provider offering, among other things, solutions for electronic payment transactions. In June 2020, Wirecard filed for insolvency after it became known that 1.9 billion euros had "disappeared". Olaf Scholz declared on ARD and ZDF's "Morgenmagazin", addressing an audience of millions: "There is only one course of action: Going ahead, not hiding anything, actively being at the forefront of clearing things up and making sure that all things are cleared up." However, when it came to the actual clarification, Olaf Scholz played a dubious role: Repeatedly, the Ministry of Finance in cooperation with the SPD parliamentary group – failed to hand over mountains of files or handed them over too late to the Bundestag Investigation Committee. That was why particularly interrogations of various officials of the financial supervisory authority Bafin (Bundesamt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht) were blocked as a result. This office is subordinated to the Federal Ministry of Finance and thus to Olaf Scholz. It is suspected of having contributed to the fact that Wirecard's fictitious transactions and the missing of nearly two billion euros in the group's balance sheet were not uncovered earlier due to dubious decisions. There are accusations of self-enrichment against Bafin employees in connection with Wirecard. Furthermore, the Federal Minister of Finance, Olaf Scholz, wanted to protect the company (Wirecard) from insolvency with money out of the Corona aid Fund! The sums involved were horrendous and were intended to patch up the missing 1.9 billion euros in the company. Money that was actually intended for the ailing German economy. A state injection of billions for a scandalous company? Respect for you? WOMAN (unseen): 3. His term in office in Hamburg during the G20 summit In July 2017 the G20 summit took place in Hamburg. In the run-up to the G20 summit, politicians and police – with Olaf Scholz as Hamburg's mayor at the time – promised security for all citizens. But then three days of violent riots broke out in the Hanseatic city: left-wing extremists set cars on fire devastating entire streets. The result were 476 injured officers and 12 million euros of damage. For the largest police operation in Hamburg's post-war history, 20,000 emergency personnel with all the necessary equipment were brought in from all over Germany. Neither the Federal Police nor the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution were involved beforehand in the decision to hold a G20 summit in Hamburg. The debacle was huge, the costs enormous and Olaf Scholz? Remained in office ... Respect for you? MAN (unseen): 4. Big business entanglements A few days after his appointment as Finance Minister, Scholz appointed the German head of the US major bank Goldman Sachs, Jörg Kukies, as one of his state secretaries. According to financial expert Ernst Wolff, this appointment was Scholz’s clear signal to Wall Street to fully subordinate his ministry to their interests. That this signal came from Scholz was not surprising. As mayor of Hamburg, he had already helped to ensure that when the HSH Nordbank was broken up, its profitable parts were sold off to a US hedge fund. The unprofitable parts, on the other hand, remained with the state, which cost the taxpayer billions. Furthermore, several meetings of Scholz and his State Secretary Kukies with the CDU politician Friedrich Merz dealing with "financial market issues" point to some entanglements with big business. Why? For many years, Merz had been chairman of “Atlantikbrücke,” the largest lobbying organization for American politics in Germany, and chairman of the supervisory board of BlackRock, the largest global capital manager. He is also a member of the Trilateral Commission, another lobby organization of the very rich and powerful. Like a common thread, Olaf Scholz's closeness to and networking with high finance is evident here, that kind of high finance which is pushing social cuts and the impoverishment of the population. Respect for you? Woman (unseen) 5 Is Olaf Scholz facing a new scandal? Concealed party financing Currently, voices are being raised that the Minister of Finance used the services of his ministry for the current election campaign. Apparently, chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz enlisted the help of civil servants and external experts from a state research institution for an SPD tax concept. If the suspicion was confirmed, it would constitute a violation of the Political Parties Act, said Sophie Schönberger, a law professor from Düsseldorf. "It is covert party financing and is violating Basic Law," the legal expert said. If Goldman Sachs managers or IMF chairmen can become presidents of the European Central Bank, the EU has obviously lost all proximity to the needs and interests of the population. And when BlackRock representatives are being traded as chancellor candidates in Germany, we are apparently too little informed about the intentions and methods of the financial sector and accordingly too uncritical. However, we should be informed indeed, when on the one hand the fortunes of billionaires are constantly increasing and at the same time more and more people live in poverty, as well in our country. This development is no coincidence, but the result of decades of policy that have favored the richest 0.01 percent. The largest financial group of the world, BlackRock, now officially advises the EU on financial policy matters. Can the influence of the financial industry on politics be made any more obvious?"
